Open Committee Chair Positions

2024-2025 School Year

Square 1 Art
The Square 1 Art Chair coordinates Marengo's annual Square 1 Art fundraiser, which turns our children's artwork into keepsakes gifts. Funds benefit the following year's 5th Grade Promotion Committee. Responsibilities include:
  • Work with Square 1 Art and teachers to have children produce original artwork for submission by late Sept.
  • Distribute submission forms to the classrooms, collect artwork, and send in to Square 1 Art.
  • Create marketing materials and emails to be distributed via PTA's communication channels (e.g., Lion Loop, social media, room parents, etc.) and seek proper approval from PTA leadership and school principal.

Red Ribbon Week
The Red Ribbon Week Chair works to organize daily events or activities to promote Red Ribbon Week and healthy living. This week usually falls on the last full week of October. Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate with school administration for a neighborhood walk to kick off the week of events. This usually happens first thing on Monday morning.
  • Decorate the school or trees surrounding campus with red ribbons or other signage before the week begins.
  • Plan daily activities for the kids during the lunch recess period for each grade level. This could include bringing in a professional dancer to lead a dance activity, working with local businesses like Kim's Hapkido for a martial arts activity, coordinating with the YMCA to plan a football toss/basketball competition, or passing out healthy snacks.
  • Make an announcement during an assembly regarding Red Ribbon Week.
  • Email the teachers the Red Ribbon Week plan/agenda.
  • Coordinate with other committees on ways to incorporate healthy and active living (e.g., Bike Bus, Gardening Committee) where it makes sense.
  • Recruit and lead a group of parents to help execute all the activities of the week!
  • We don't expect anyone to do all this themselves, and it's always more fun to do this with fellow parents.

Holiday Workshop

The Holiday Workshop Chair works to organize a variety of holiday-themed activities for the kids that take place one Friday afternoon in the school auditorium. Responsibilities include:

  • Pick crafts (usually around 6 different crafts) and purchase necessary supplies.
  • Create marketing materials and emails to be distributed via PTA's communication channels (e.g., Lion Loop, social media, room parents, etc.) and seek proper approval from PTA leadership and school principal.
  • Create sign up sheets and coordinate volunteers for the day of the event.
  • Recruit and lead a group of parents to help support you in these responsibilities!
  • We don't expect anyone to do all this themselves, and it's always more fun to do this with fellow parents.
Representation

The Representation Committee Chair helps to enhance Marengo events, activities and communication by looking at them through a Representation lens to foster inclusivity and celebrate our diverse community. Since this is a relatively new committee, there is a great deal of flexibility in this role to make it your own. Responsibilities may include:

  • Partner with other committee chairs (e.g., Holiday Workshop, Art Happenings) to ensure we are taking opportunities to celebrate diversity and be inclusive in their activities or events.
  • Optional:  Coordinate activities to celebrate specific representation months, such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women's History Month, etc. This could include making signage to post around campus, inviting a group to do a cultural performance during an Assembly, organizing an after-school celebration featuring music, food, photo opp, or crafts, and working with Mrs. Becker in the library to create a display of relevant books.
  • Create marketing materials and emails to be distributed via PTA's communication channels (e.g., Lion Loop, social media, room parents, etc.) and seek proper approval from PTA leadership and school principal.
  • Oversee Taste of Marengo and associated recipe submissions if Lion Loop feature continues
  • Recruit and lead a group of parents to help support you in these responsibilities. We don't expect anyone to do all this themselves, and it's always more fun to do this with fellow parents.

Super Science Night - Co-Chair Needed
Super Science Night is an evening event open to all students to encourage exploration and foster curiosity in a variety of STEM topics. Kids can choose from talks on topics ranging from the human body to the Mars Rover. Our current Science Night chair, Andy Nickel, is looking for a co-chair to help recruit and coordinate presenters and organize volunteers. Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit presenters on a variety of topics and coordinate facilities usage.
  • Gain approvals from the school principal and PTA president for space, content, and facility needs.
  • Create sign up sheets and coordinate volunteers for the day of the event.
  • Create marketing materials and emails to be distributed via PTA's communication channels (e.g., Lion Loop, social media, room parents, etc.) and seek proper approval from PTA leadership and school principal, if necessary.

Lost and Found - Co-Chair Needed
We all know our kids lose a lot of stuff! Our current Lost and Found chair, Janice Chiang, is looking for a co-chair to help keep the lost and found racks tidy and organized, as well as prepare donation pick ups. Responsibilities include:
  • Tidy and organize the lost and found racks on a periodic basis.
  • Schedule donation pick ups either on a regular basis or as needed.
  • Prepare all unclaimed items for donation pick up.
  • Periodically bring out Lost and Found racks to the front of the Marengo office and the back Stratford gate during drop-off or pick-up times for parents and guardians to look through.
  • Create flyers and notices for Lost and Found as needed to be distributed via PTA's communication channels (e.g., Lion Loop, social media, room parents, etc.) with proper approval from PTA leadership and school principal.
